Trickster stopped appearing in menubar

Trickster (3.9.11) has just stopped appearing in the menubar. I’ve subscribed via SetApp, and have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, multiple times and still no luck. I can pop up the Trickster window via a global shortcut, but I would much prefer to see it in the menubar.

I use Barbee, but I’ve tried quitting Barbee and Trickster still won’t show.

Any ideas, please?

I’m not sure what Barbee is but do you have the issue of the menubar being too full with icon and so the icon for menubar apps not showing? That’s common, especially if you have a MacBook with the notch. I personally use the app Ice to manage my menubar on the MBP 14" and it helps, otherwise, too much stuff in my menubar to see everything. Is this what’s happening on your Mac?

Thanks for your response, Jacob.

Barbee is a menubar management app like Ice and Bartender. And, no, that’s not the problem. I also have a 14" MBP (M4) but this happens also with a large external screen and when Barbee is not running. Barbee, like Ice and Batender, enables you to see the menubar apps that are ‘hidden’ and Trickster is not showing there either.

It’s really strange and very frustrating, as I use Trickster many times every day. Appreciate your support!

I’m not sure what it could be. There shouldn’t be any changes in code in this version regarding the menu bar functionality. Usually it happens because it’s full, but you said it’s not the case for you.

Did you try just to restart your Mac? Maybe it’s a fluke in your current state of Mac.

In any case, since the problem of Trickster not being visible happens to people with busy menu bars, I was thinking of adding some code to detect when this happens and maybe have a message pop up or have some other debugging functionality for that. You could try to download the direct version from our website and seeing if it makes a difference. But really, they are exactly the same app. It’s just how they activate that’s different.

Thanks for your help, Jacob. I don’t think I mentioned, but I have Trickster via SetApp. And here’s what I tried:

  • Restart - no change
  • Delete Trickster and all associated files, and reinstall from SetApp - no change
  • Delete Trickster and all associated files, download from your website and reinstall - FIXED!

Should I take this up with SetApp, or would it be better if you contact them?

I just thought, it could it be that Trickster was running from inside the SetApp folder in the Applications folder, so I quit Trickster, deleted the SetApp version, and moved it to the SetApp folder. It still seems to run ok now. (and looking back, I see that we did discuss the SetApp situation)

I don’t think you should take it with Setapp. They’ll just tell you to contact us. It is strange though that there’s a difference since they are the same app and this specific functionality (menubar) is no different and is not even changed in latest versions. I also didn’t hear about this issue from other Setapp customers. And from where it runs shouldn’t make a difference, either, since it’s the same app.

The problem went away and then came back, Jacob. (Maybe I was running a trial version from your website…?) The only way I can get Trickster to appear in the menubar is to download it from your website - but then I get the ‘trail expired’ message. As I should be able to run this from SetApp I’m reluctant to pay for a license from ApparentSoftware, but if I could get a discount code that would make it easier, and I’m always happy to support developers of software that I use a lot. (By the way, the SetApp version is 3.9.11)

The direct version is also 3.9.11. It should be the same as the Setapp version and really the only difference is how it’s licensed and distributed. But I have no problem giving you a discount. I can send you a 50% off through DM, if you want.

I installed the direct version and it worked fine. Then I had to do a restart and it’s disappeared from the menubar again!

Let me think what else it could be.
Does it respond to the keyboard hotkey invocations?

I would also suggest to check Console.app’s log filtered for Trickster when you launch it. Even send me the log entries and I’ll look through them. Maybe there’ll be some clue there in case it’s some kind of an exception or system error or something like that.
